A Look Back at November

So I was only able to get in three books in November but that's not too bad I guess.

Only one more to go before I'll meet my goal for 2018 0f 30 books!!

November went by way too fast.  So glad that we enjoyed our few days or cool weather under our beautiful tree!

We tried on some crowns as we started planning the 2019 pageant!

Took some time to kick back and read!

Looking forward to an awesome December!

TBR Updated

Well, that last stack didn't make it one day before I gave out two of the four to be checked out by my students.  So I am revamping the list.  I read another I Survived... book this weekend.

This book gave a unique perspective on what that day must have been like through the eyes of a teenage boy.  I couldn't put it down.

So three books left before I reach my 2018 goal of 30 books.
Hmm...

So here we go, for now, this is it.

November/December TBR List

I need to finish 4 books to meet my 2018 reading goal of 30 books.  I have to be honest I am a little nervous about not meeting my goal.  So I decided to put together a To Be Read list for November/December.

So here are my plans...
"Stargirl" by Jerry Spinelli (This is a reread since I am reading it with my 8th graders.)
"I Survived The Bombing of Pearl Harbor, 1941" by Lauren Tarshish (Just because I love these!)
"Rebound" by Kwame Alexander (I absolutely loved the other two books of his I've read!)
"And the Ocean Was Our Sky" written by Patrick Ness, illustrated by Rovina Cai
(It's beautiful!)

Weekend Reads

This week has been super busy so I hate that I am just now sharing.
I read two amazing books this weekend.

First, "I Survived Hurricane Katrina, 2005" by Lauren Tarshis
This story is told from the point of view of a young boy who is swept away by the current.  Lauren Tarshis does an incredible job of creating vivid images and powerful emotions that must have flooded the victims of Katrina.

Secondly, was a book called "The Delusion".  This powerful book will forever be etched in my mind.  Laura Gallier seeks to address the darkness that seemingly has overcome our world by shedding truth and light.

Homecoming 2018

This week always takes me back.  It doesn't seem all that long ago that I was a student here at CHS and I was participating in the homecoming activities.  I absolutely love the detail, planning, and care that goes into making this week a memorable week for our students.  We have dress-up days, class competitions, and so much more.  Here is a snapshot of Disney Day!

This Life

If you would have asked me when I was a kid if I thought I would ever be a librarian, I would have said no way!  Even when I earned my master's degree I honestly thought when I got old and "tired of teaching" I would use my library degree.  Little did I know God had other plans. I finished my library degree in July 2009.  That summer, the librarian at the middle school where I worked retired and my library life began.

When I applied for the position, I knew I wanted to do something different in our library.  I wanted it to be the heart of the school that I had seen in my college courses, not the babysitting room or silent showdown like many of the libraries I had witnessed.  Luckily, the administrator I worked for at the time gave me a chance to make this vision a reality.  I began working with teachers, collaborative teaching and offering instructional support.  I began working with students to make our library a place they wanted to be, a place they could study, work, relax, and even take a breather from time to time.  And slowly but surely the culture shifted.  Teachers began to see me as more than a key to an extra prep-time.  They began to work with me to find materials and activities for our students.  It was amazing!

Then in 2016, I made a leap of faith.  The librarian position opened up at the high school where I had spent all of my grade school days.  Did I dare apply?  There were so many factors.  I loved the school I was working at and all the people there.  Ten years is a long time and I am not always a fan of change.  Only ten minutes from home and still a very small school, Cleveland had so much to offer.  So after much prayer, I turned in my application.

Well, that's that.  I absolutely love it here.  It has been such a blessing to get to know the students and be part of the community again where I was raised.  My mother taught kindergarten here and it was honestly like coming home.  Luckily the administration here shares my library vision.  Our library is more than the room with the books.  This is the living room of our school, the hub, the heart.  We entertain here, we learn here, we rest here, we even have a little therapy from time to time.  The goal is that everyone at Cleveland School feels welcome in this room.  No matter their interest, background, grade level, we all have something in common and can work toward a common goal.

And in case anyone has any doubts...I  love this library life!!!

Where Did August Go

It's hard to believe our first month of school is over.  Just in the library, we are already past orientation, internet safety, finishin...
